Before the wedding · United States

Prepare for a prenup. Start with a conversation.

A prenup is a prenuptial agreement. You can organize your wishes and questions yourself. A lawyer helps translate them into suitable legal terms; our worksheets do not do that.

Already married? A separate path: Postnup preparation →

Your path: discuss questions → download your notes → prepare asset and debt schedules offline → meet your own lawyer. Nothing here is submitted for signing.

What you can prepare, step by step

  1. 01

    Start without an ultimatum

Explain how you want to protect both people. Choose a calm time, not the eve of the wedding. Either person may ask for a pause.

  2. 02

    Identify where you need advice

List your state of residence, relocation plans, and countries where you own assets. Ask counsel about applicable law rather than choosing it yourself.

  3. 03

    Compare expectations

Work through the questions separately or together. Note preferences, differences, and questions for counsel. Matching answers do not create an agreement.

  4. 04

    Prepare your financial picture offline

List assets, debts, income, and businesses. Share records securely with your lawyers, not by uploading them to this website.

  5. 05

Get independent advice and a quote

Check licensing and relevant experience. Ask who each lawyer represents and what drafting, review, negotiation, translation, and revisions will cost.

  6. 06

Review the final text with counsel

Allow time to understand and revise it. Timing, language, formalities, and signing depend on applicable law. Keep agreed copies and ask when to revisit the document.

Preparation for a lawyer consultation, not legal advice or a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement. Rules depend on the state and country. Work with a family-law attorney to draft and review your agreement; each partner should have independent counsel. This tool does not provide signing or guarantee enforceability.

What a prenup might cover: an illustrated outline

This fictional example shows topics, not legally operative clauses. Not for signing; not attorney-reviewed. Copying it or adding names does not make it a contract.

FICTIONAL EDUCATIONAL EXAMPLE. NOT FOR SIGNING. Alex and Sam plan to marry. Alex owns a home and business; Sam has savings and a student loan. These are discussion topics for independent counsel, not recommended terms. 1. Context and goals: housing, business, and career-break protection. Counsel assesses applicable law. 2. Asset and debt schedules: each prepares records; lawyers determine sufficient disclosure. 3. Premarital property: how might Alex’s home and Sam’s savings be addressed? No decision or waiver is provided. 4. Earnings and acquisitions: how might joint purchases and business growth be addressed? 5. Debts: how might loan costs be discussed while considering creditor rights? 6. Housing: how might the other person’s payments and renovations be considered? 7. Family care: what protection could they discuss if one reduces paid work? 8. Inheritance: are separate documents or specialists needed? 9. Review: what should they ask about relocation, children, and employment changes? 10. Final review: lawyers address formalities and signing. No signatures, acknowledgments, operative clauses, or enforceability guarantees are included. Adding names does not turn this into a contract. This is not a legal form. Support, property, and children’s rights need individual review. Do not add duties about sexual access or giving up safety.

To offer a ready-to-sign legal form, we would first need a licensed lawyer’s documented review for the supported jurisdiction, version control, and a clear scope of service. A disclaimer alone does not establish validity or remove legal risk.
